⚠ After Gorman: A Trader Runs the Wealth FirmLow threat

Morgan Stanley (MS) — threat to the moat

Morgan Stanley's wealth strategy is now run by its former head of trading, who beat every goal he set within six months.

James Gorman ran Morgan Stanley from January 2012 to December 2023 and turned it toward wealth management1. When he stepped down, the board described a firm "transformed into a strong and balanced financial institution with a long-term sustainable business model" over his 14 years as chief executive2.

A smooth handover to the trading side.

His successor came from the other side of the house. The board announced that "Co-President Edward (Ted) Pick will become the Firm’s Chief Executive Officer, effective January 1, 2024"3. Pick had been head of Institutional Securities from July 2018 to December 2023 and global head of sales and trading before that4. He became chairman in January 20255. At the same time Andy Saperstein was named head of Wealth and Investment Management and Dan Simkowitz co-president and head of Institutional Securities6.

So far the handover has gone well. Under Pick the firm set goals in January 2026 and beat all of them within six months78. His pay reflects it: "$45 million includes an annual base salary of $1,500,000 and performance-based incentive compensation (bonus) of $43.5 million"9.

The risk is emphasis, not competence. A chief executive from trading may be tempted to lean on the balance sheet in good markets, and total assets rose about 38% in the eighteen months to June 202610.

The pay structure ties the chief executive to the long run. The proxy statement says that "75% of Mr. Pick’s incentive compensation is deferred for three years" and subject to cancellation11. Gorman, chief executive from January 201212, became executive chairman on the handover13, and Pick added the chairman's title in January 202514.

The firm grew its workforce while revenue surged. Headcount was 80,393 in June 2025 and 82,944 in June 2026, about 3% more1516, while second-quarter revenue rose about 27%17. That operating leverage is what a trading boom delivers to a firm that controls its costs; the test of the new leadership is whether the costs stay down when the boom ends.

The goals are the scorecard he wrote. Firmwide ROTCE was 26.6% in the second quarter of 2026 against a 20% goal1819; a year below 20% under the man who set the target would test the claim that the firm is now balanced.
