Morgan Stanley (MS) — threat to the moat

Morgan Stanley's loans grew 17% in 2025 and its deposits 11%, so the gap was filled with dearer money.

In 2025 Morgan Stanley's loans grew faster than its deposits. Loans rose to $289,038 million from $246,814 million, about 17%, while deposits rose to $415,523 million from $376,007 million, about 11%12.

Loans and borrowings outran deposits.

A bank can close that gap with borrowings, and Morgan Stanley's borrowings rose to $348,935 million from $288,819 million3. Borrowed money costs more than a swept deposit.

The pattern continued into 2026: loans were $315,653 million and deposits $446,068 million in June4. The ratio of loans to deposits is still well below what a commercial bank runs, so this is not a funding strain.

Wealth Management's own figures show the same tilt. Its bank loans rose to $181 billion from $160 billion in 2025, about 13%, while its deposits rose to $408 billion from $370 billion, about 10%56. The segment's loans reached $195.7 billion in June 20267.

The deposit base still covers the loan book comfortably. At the end of 2025 deposits were $415,523 million against loans of $289,038 million8, so loans were about 70% of deposits9. The trend matters more than the level.

The risk is to the spread. Lending funded by wholesale money earns less than lending funded by client cash. The gap between loan and deposit growth is the number to follow; two more years of loans outpacing deposits by several points would mean the cheapest part of the funding advantage was being used up.
