The Wealth MachineWide moat
Morgan Stanley (MS) — moat facet
Morgan Stanley turned a brokerage into a subscription on eight trillion dollars, and the subscription now earns nearly as much as the trading floor.
The reason Morgan Stanley is no longer just an investment bank is its Wealth Management segment. It earned net revenues of $31,754 million and pre-tax income of $9,293 million in 20251, against $15,100 million and $3,332 million in 20152. Revenue roughly doubled in ten years, and pre-tax income nearly tripled.
The business is a set of charges on client money. Asset management revenue was $18,627 million in 2025, net interest income from client deposits and loans $7,911 million, and transactional revenue $4,588 million3. Client assets were $7,381 billion at the end of 20254 and $8,084 billion by June 20265.
It is sticky for three reasons. Fees on balances recur without any client action. Advisers are tied to the firm by $4,858 million of loans and by deferred pay6. And the client's cash, loans and trading account increasingly sit at Morgan Stanley too: Wealth Management deposits were $408 billion at the end of 20257.
The result is a margin that climbs with scale. The segment's pre-tax margin was about 23% in 2020 and 30.5% in the second quarter of 202689. Across Wealth and Investment Management the firm reported total client assets of $10 trillion in the second quarter of 202610, the goal it had set.
This is the wide part of Morgan Stanley's moat. It is also the part most exposed to asset prices, since most of each year's asset growth is market appreciation.
The five-year comparison the firm publishes is stark. Wealth Management net revenues rose from about $19 billion in 2020 to about $32 billion in 2025, and the pre-tax margin from 23% to 29%, by its own summary11. Net new assets over 2021 to 2025 were about $1.64 trillion, nearly three times the $0.58 trillion of the five years before12.
The second quarter of 2026 showed the engine at full speed. Wealth Management revenue rose about 14% and asset management revenue about 19% from a year earlier1314, while transactional revenue fell15. The fees on balances did the work. Net interest income rose to $2,254 million from $1,910 million16 as deposits and loans grew.
Net new assets are the running test of whether the machine is still gathering. They were $356.3 billion in 202517; a year below $250 billion in rising markets would say the gathering had slowed and the margin was running on the market alone.
Client assets $8.1tn; margin 30.5% in Q2 2026.
The profit the annuity produces; a decline with markets flat would mean the wealth engine was slowing.
