Morgan Stanley (MS) — threat to the moat

Morgan Stanley's balance sheet grew 38% in eighteen months while its equity grew far less.

Morgan Stanley's balance sheet has grown far faster than its capital. Total assets were $1,215,071 million at the end of 2024, $1,420,270 million at the end of 2025 and $1,675,057 million in June 202612, about 38% in eighteen months3. Common equity rose to $106,579 million in June 2026 from $94,761 million at the end of 202445, far less.

Assets tripled the pace of equity.

The growth supports trading, prime brokerage and lending, which is where the revenue records came from. It also raises leverage: the Tier 1 leverage ratio was 6.0% and the supplementary leverage ratio 4.9% in June 20266.

More assets on the same capital means more risk per dollar of equity. It can also raise the G-SIB surcharge, which the firm says could rise to 3.5% from 20287.

Borrowings rose alongside assets, to $348,935 million at the end of 2025 from $288,819 million8, and long-term debt was $383,155 million in June 20269. The firm is funding the larger balance sheet with a mix of deposits and wholesale money, and the wholesale part costs more.

The leverage ratio is the check. A Tier 1 leverage ratio falling below 5.5% would say the balance sheet was outgrowing the capital, and the next downturn would test it.
