Equity: The Largest Desk, and a RecordNarrow moat

Morgan Stanley (MS) — moat facet

Morgan Stanley's biggest trading desk earns its record by lending to hedge funds, which is steadier than trading until the hedge funds de-lever.

The single most important line in Institutional Securities is equity sales and trading. It earned $9,986 million in 2023, $12,230 million in 2024 and $15,631 million in 20251, up about 57% in two years2. In 2025 it was about 22% of the whole firm's net revenues3.

A record, after two flat years.

The growth came mostly from lending rather than trading. The firm said the 2025 record was "driven by financing revenues from higher client balances in prime brokerage" and strong activity in derivatives and cash equities4. Prime brokerage finances hedge funds' positions and holds their securities; revenue rises with the size of the balances, which is steadier than trading volume.

The franchise is global. Equity revenue was a record again in the second quarter of 2026, at $6,300 million against $3,721 million a year earlier5, "with notable strength in Asia"6.

A prime broker's advantage is its balance sheet and its technology, and both favour size. A hedge fund that finances, clears and borrows securities through one firm pays a cost to move all of it.

The fourth quarter of 2025 showed the same pattern: equity net revenues rose on strong client activity and "financing revenues from higher client balances in prime brokerage"7. The equity desk earned $15,631 million in 2025 against $12,230 million in 20248, and the prime brokerage balances behind it have kept growing into 2026.

The equity line is also the most exposed to a market shock, because financing balances shrink when hedge funds cut leverage. The equity figure for 2026 will likely set another record after two record quarters; the test comes in the first year markets fall, when a decline of more than a quarter would show how much of the record was balance growth that reverses.

Moat trajectory: Widening

Equity revenue $10.0bn (2023) to $15.6bn (2025); $6.3bn in Q2 2026.

The largest desk; a fall of more than a quarter in a down market would show how cyclical the prime balances are.
