Seven Trillion Dollars in the Wealth BusinessWide moat

Morgan Stanley (MS) — moat facet

Morgan Stanley's wealth clients hold more than eight trillion dollars with it, and each dollar pays a fee whether or not anyone trades.

Wealth Management's client assets are the base on which almost everything else in the segment is charged. They were $4,187 billion at the end of 2022, $5,129 billion in 2023, $6,194 billion in 2024 and $7,381 billion at the end of 202512. By 30 June 2026 they had reached $8,084 billion3.

Nearly doubled in three and a half years.

Size matters here because the fee is a percentage of it. Asset management revenue, the fees charged on managed and fee-based accounts, was $18,627 million in 20254, about 58.7% of the segment's net revenues5. Every dollar of client assets that sits in an advised account pays that fee every year whether or not the client trades.

The assets are also spread across three kinds of relationship. At the end of 2025 advisor-led client assets were $5,715 billion and self-directed assets, largely from E*TRADE, $1,667 billion6. Workplace plans held another $534 billion of unvested stock that is not yet anyone's to invest7. The page on the funnel describes how the second and third feed the first.

The growth is not only market appreciation. Net new assets were $356.3 billion in 2025, $251.7 billion in 2024 and $282.3 billion in 202389. Across 2021 to 2025 the firm put the total at about $1.64 trillion, against about $0.58 trillion in the five years before10.

The total in June 2026 broke down into advisor-led assets of $6,273 billion and self-directed assets of $1,811 billion, with stock plan unvested assets of $658 billion counted outside it11. The firm counts client assets across Wealth and Investment Management together at $9,276 billion at the end of 2025, with about $350 billion counted in both segments12.

The moat here is scale plus stickiness: assets that arrive and do not leave. The client asset total will be reported again in October; a year in which it grew less than the market, with net new assets below $200 billion, would say the franchise had stopped gathering and was only riding prices.

Moat trajectory: Widening

Client assets $4.2tn (2022) to $8.1tn (June 2026).

The number that tests this moat
Reported
Wealth Management client assets, latest quarter
$8,084bn (Q2 2026) vs $7,381bn at end-2025

The base the fees are charged on; growth below the market with weak net new assets would mean the franchise is only riding prices.
