An Efficiency Ratio Down to 65%Narrow moat
Morgan Stanley (MS) — moat facet
Morgan Stanley spent 65 cents of every revenue dollar in the first half of 2026, against 77 cents in 2023.
The efficiency ratio, non-interest expenses as a share of net revenues, shows whether scale is turning into profit. Morgan Stanley's was 69% in 2020, 67% in 2021, 73% in 2022, 77% in 2023, 71% in 2024 and 68% in 2025123. In the first half of 2026 it was 65%4.
The firm's goal was 70%5, and it has now beaten it for two consecutive periods.
Most of the cost is people. Compensation expense was $29,216 million of $48,342 million of non-interest expenses in 202567, about 60%8. The firm had about 83 thousand employees across 42 countries at the end of 20259.
The firm also cut. In March 2026 it took a severance charge of $178 million on an action that "impacted approximately 2% of our global workforce at that time"10. Headcount was 82,944 at the end of June 2026 against 83,922 in March11.
Non-compensation expenses rose to $19,126 million in 2025 from $17,723 million12, about 8%, while net revenues rose about 14%13. The March 2026 severance charge of $178 million was split $94 million to Institutional Securities, $61 million to Wealth Management and $23 million to Investment Management14.
The ratio falls fastest when revenue surges, as in the first half of 2026. The test is a flat year: holding near 70% with revenue unchanged would show the cost discipline was real; a return above 75% would repeat 2023.
Efficiency ratio 77% (2023) to 65% (H1 2026).
Scale turning into margin; a return above 75% in a flat year would repeat 2023.
