◆ What the Market Isn't Pricing In
AbbVie (ABBV) — the variant view
AbbVie trades at 75 times reported earnings and 17 times adjusted ones, and the truth lies in the royalty and research costs the adjusted figure leaves out.
📈 ABBV valuation, revenue & earnings — P/E, P/S, revenue, EPS →AbbVie's shares trade at two very different multiples. At $265.12 on 24 September 2026, a market value of $468.50 billion1, the trailing price-to-earnings ratio was 74.90 and the forward ratio 17.472. The gap is not a forecast of explosive growth; it is accounting.
Reported earnings carry three large charges. Amortisation of intangible assets was $7,377 million in 2025, the change in contingent consideration $6,495 million, and acquired research $5,016 million3. Diluted earnings per share were $2.36 on a GAAP basis and $10.00 adjusted45.
The market uses the adjusted figure, and mostly it is right to: amortisation is a non-cash cost of past purchases. But two of the adjustments are real. The contingent consideration is a royalty on Skyrizi paid in cash, $2,865 million in 20256. And acquired research is how AbbVie now fills its pipeline: excluding it every year excludes the cost of staying in business.
What the market may be underweighting is the 2033 date. Skyrizi and Rinvoq were about 42% of revenue in 20257, and a forward multiple of about 17 assumes the franchise's cash flows continue long enough to justify it.
The share price has already rerated. AbbVie's market value was $314.02 billion at the end of 2024 and $403.83 billion at the end of 20258, and $468.50 billion in September 20269. Some of that reflects the proof that Humira's replacement worked; some reflects Skyrizi and Rinvoq running ahead of plan. The forward multiple of 17.4710 is not high for a company growing revenue about 10% a year, but it assumes the growth continues into the 2030s.
The one number that reconciles the two views is free cash flow: $17,816 million in 202511, about 3.8% of the market value12. If it rises toward $25 billion as Skyrizi and Rinvoq peak, the adjusted multiple is right; if it stalls while acquired research continues, the reported one is closer to the truth.
