⚠ Net Debt of $64 BillionModerate threat

AbbVie (ABBV) — threat to the moat

Six years after Allergan, AbbVie still has about $64 billion of net debt and a rising interest bill.

AbbVie still carries the debt of its largest acquisition and has added to it. Long-term debt was $62,481 million and the current portion $8,341 million at 30 June 2026, against cash of $6,569 million1, net debt of about $64.3 billion2. Contractual long-term debt was $64,503 million at the end of 20253.

Interest expense, net ($M)1,68420232,16020242,6272025AbbVie Form 10-K FY2025
Up 56% in two years.

The interest bill is rising: interest expense, net, was $1,684 million in 2023, $2,160 million in 2024 and $2,627 million in 20254. Interest paid was $3,002 million in 20255.

The debt is serviceable. Operating cash flow of $19,030 million in 20256 covers interest many times. But combined with negative equity, it leaves AbbVie with less room to buy its way through the 2033 cliff than it had for Humira.

The debt structure is long-dated. AbbVie's contractual long-term debt of $64,503 million at the end of 20257 is spread over many maturities, and it issued $7,991 million of new long-term debt in the first half of 20268, refinancing and adding. Interest costs will keep rising as older, cheaper debt is replaced.

Net debt at the end of 2026, after the Apogee payment, is the number to read. A figure above $70 billion would mean the company is borrowing faster than it is generating cash.
