Twenty-Four Percent Outside the United StatesNarrow moat
AbbVie (ABBV) — moat facet
Only about a quarter of AbbVie's sales come from outside America, where its drugs earn far less.
AbbVie's international business is smaller and structured differently. International net revenues were $14,557 million in 2025, against $46,603 million in the United States1, and $4,129 million in the second quarter of 2026 against $12,861 million2.
Its drugs earn less abroad. Skyrizi sold $2,360 million outside the United States in 2025 against $15,202 million inside it3, reflecting lower prices under government price controls.
Part of the international business is shared. Imbruvica's international revenue is recorded as collaboration revenue reflecting profit sharing with Johnson & Johnson4.
International growth also exposes AbbVie to currency. The 10-K estimates that a 10% appreciation in the currencies it hedges would reduce the fair value of its foreign exchange forward contracts by $2.0 billion5.
Humira's international decline began earlier and was less severe in dollars. International Humira sales were $2,618 million in 2022 and $1,478 million in 202567, because European biosimilars had arrived years before and prices were already lower. The international business is less profitable per patient and less exposed to American policy.
Currency adds noise. AbbVie hedges part of its foreign revenue, and the 10-K estimates that a 10% appreciation in hedged currencies would reduce the fair value of its forward contracts by $2.0 billion8. International growth in local currencies is therefore the cleaner measure of how the business is doing abroad.
The international share of revenue, about 24% in 20259, is the thing to follow: a rise would diversify AbbVie away from American pricing policy.
International share near 24%.
The diversification away from American prices; faster growth abroad would reduce the policy risk.
