$65.1 Billion of Rebates on $61.2 Billion of RevenueNarrow moat

AbbVie (ABBV) — moat facet

AbbVie handed $65.1 billion back in rebates and chargebacks in 2025, more than the $61.2 billion it reported as revenue.

The largest number in AbbVie's accounts is one most readers never see. Provisions for rebates and chargebacks totalled $65.1 billion in 2025, $59.3 billion in 2024 and $56.8 billion in 20231. Net revenues were $61,160 million2. AbbVie gives back more in rebates and chargebacks than it keeps, so its gross sales were more than twice its reported revenue3.

More than tripled in six years.

The rebates go to three groups. In 2025 provisions were $21,283 million for Medicaid and Medicare, $22,307 million for managed care, and $17,710 million for wholesaler chargebacks4. Each is a negotiated discount off a list price that few patients pay.

The trend is steeply up. Provisions were $18.8 billion in 2019 and $33.9 billion in 20215. In six years they rose about three and a half times while net revenues less than doubled6.

This is what pricing power looks like in American pharmaceuticals: the list price is high and rising, and the net price is set in negotiations with benefit managers and governments. AbbVie's power is in having drugs payers must cover; its weakness is that the payers decide how much of the list price survives.

The rebates are an accounting estimate as well as a payment. AbbVie records provisions when it sells and adjusts them as claims come in. A small error in the estimate on $65.1 billion of provisions7 can move reported revenue materially in a quarter, one more reason AbbVie's quarterly figures need care.

The ratio of rebates to net revenue is the gauge. It was about 1.06 in 20258; a rise would mean more of each list-price increase is being handed back, and a fall would mean the new drugs command better net prices than the old ones.

Moat trajectory: Narrowing

Rebates grew from $18.8bn in 2019 to $65.1bn in 2025, faster than revenue.
