⚠ Two Drugs, 42% of Revenue, One Patent YearHigh threat
AbbVie (ABBV) — threat to the moat
Almost half of AbbVie's sales now come from two drugs whose main American patents expire in the same year, 2033.
AbbVie replaced one concentrated franchise with another. Skyrizi and Rinvoq each represented more than 10% of net revenues and together accounted for approximately 42% in 20251; in the second quarter of 2026 they were about 47%23. In 2024 Skyrizi, Humira and Rinvoq together were approximately 47%4.
Both drugs' United States composition of matter patents are expected to expire in 20335. Rinvoq's generic entry is settled for April 2037 at the earliest6, but Skyrizi, the larger drug, has no such date disclosed beyond the patent.
The Humira precedent is the whole company's recent history: 79% of sales gone in three years7. A second cliff of that shape on a franchise worth more than $30 billion would be larger than the first.
The concentration is rising, not falling. Skyrizi and Rinvoq were about 13% of revenue in 2022, 22% in 2023, 31% in 2024 and 42% in 20258. Management expects combined revenue of about $31.6 billion in 2026910, which would push the share above half if the rest of the company grows slowly. A company that has learned the danger of a single franchise has built another.
The measure to follow is the share of revenue from Skyrizi and Rinvoq. The higher it goes before 2033, the more AbbVie depends on replacing them in time.
