Replacing Humira Before It FellWide moat

AbbVie (ABBV) — moat facet

AbbVie lost 79% of the world's best-selling drug in three years and still grew, because it had built the replacements before the patent ran out.

AbbVie's moat is best seen in what happened after its largest product lost protection. Humira sold $21,237 million in 20221; American biosimilars arrived in January 20232; by 2025 Humira sold $4,540 million3. Over the same three years AbbVie's total net revenues rose from $58,054 million to $61,160 million45.

The replacement outgrew the original.

The replacements were ready. Skyrizi and Rinvoq sold a combined $25,866 million in 20256, about 42% of revenue7, against $7,687 million in 20228. Management expected them to reach about $31.6 billion in 2026910, a year ahead of its own target of more than $31 billion in 202711. Immunology as a whole sold $30,406 million in 2025 and $8,786 million in the second quarter of 2026, up 15.1%1213.

The replacement worked because it was planned years ahead. AbbVie built its successors' labels in the same diseases, sold them to the same specialists and moved patients within its own portfolio as Humira's access fell.

The moat has a date on it. The composition of matter patents on both drugs are expected to expire in the United States in 2033, with Rinvoq's generic entry settled for no earlier than April 203714. About 42% of revenue depends on two molecules with roughly seven years of core protection left.

The ramp took years to build. Skyrizi and Rinvoq together sold $402 million in 201915 and $4,590 million in 20211617, while Humira was still growing: it sold $20,694 million in 202118. By the time biosimilars arrived, the successors were already selling more than a third as much as Humira at its peak19. That head start, not any single clinical result, is what made the replacement work.

This is a wide moat that has now been tested once. The number that would test it again is the share of revenue from products protected beyond 2033: as long as the pipeline and acquisitions keep adding such products, the machine that replaced Humira is working; if the share stays near zero into the 2030s, the next cliff will be larger than the last.

Moat trajectory: Holding steady

The replacement worked; the new franchise's protection runs to 2033-2037.

The number that tests this moat
Reported
Skyrizi and Rinvoq combined sales, latest quarter
$8,030M (Q2 2026), about 47% of net revenues

The replacement franchise's size; a share that keeps rising toward 2033 raises the next cliff.
