Pricing Power, After the RebatesNarrow moat

AbbVie (ABBV) — moat facet

AbbVie's drugs carry very high list prices, but it gives more back in rebates than it reports as revenue, and governments are setting a growing share of its prices.

AbbVie's pricing power is real and increasingly conditional. Its drugs command American list prices that make its adjusted gross margin 84.7%1. But the list price is not what it keeps: provisions for rebates and chargebacks were $65.1 billion in 20252, more than net revenues of $61,160 million3.

Net revenues and rebates, 2025 ($bn)65.1Rebates and chargebacks61.2Net revenuesAbbVie Form 10-K FY2025
The discounts are larger than the revenue.

The pricing power sits in the United States, which produced about 76% of revenue4, and it is being negotiated away in three directions at once. Benefit managers take rebates in exchange for coverage: managed care provisions were $22,307 million5. Medicare now sets prices directly for Imbruvica from 2026, Vraylar and Linzess from 2027 and Botox from 20286. And in January 2026 AbbVie agreed pricing concessions with the government in exchange for tariff exemptions7.

The results show where the power survives. Skyrizi and Rinvoq grew about 24% in the second quarter of 20268, because payers need them. Imbruvica, the first drug with a government price, fell 29.4%9.

The discounts are larger than the profits. AbbVie's operating earnings were $15,075 million in 202510, less than a quarter of the $65.1 billion of rebates and chargebacks11. A small change in the rate of rebating therefore moves profits far more than it moves revenue, which is why negotiations with benefit managers matter as much to AbbVie as clinical results.

The facet is narrow and narrowing. The one ratio that captures it is rebates and chargebacks against net revenues, about 1.06 in 202512; if it keeps rising, more of every list-price dollar goes to payers, and the moat's economics shrink even while the drugs stay on patent.

Moat trajectory: Narrowing

Rebates keep rising faster than revenue; four products have government-set prices ahead.

The discounts that stand between list and net price; growth faster than net revenues means pricing power is leaking.
