⚠ Intangibles Are Two-Thirds of the AssetsModerate threat
AbbVie (ABBV) — threat to the moat
About two-thirds of AbbVie's assets are goodwill and intangibles, the accumulated price of the companies it bought.
AbbVie's balance sheet is dominated by what it paid for other companies. Goodwill of $35,640 million and intangible assets of $52,641 million at the end of 20251 add up to about 66% of total assets of $133,960 million2.
That makes the balance sheet sensitive to disappointments. Impairments of intangibles were $4,229 million in 2023 and $4,476 million in 20243, including $2.1 billion on Imbruvica after its Medicare selection4 and $4.5 billion on emraclidine5.
Intangibles are also shrinking as they amortise, from $60,068 million at the end of 20246 to $49,139 million at 30 June 20267.
The intangibles also support AbbVie's reported margins in a roundabout way. Because they are amortised, the adjusted figures that exclude amortisation look far better than GAAP, and the gap, $7,377 million in 20258, will narrow only as the assets are used up or written off.
Goodwill, unlike the other intangibles, is not amortised. It stood at $35,640 million at the end of 20259 and will remain on the balance sheet unless impaired. A goodwill impairment would be the clearest admission that an acquisition as a whole was worth less than AbbVie paid.
Future impairments are the thing to watch. Each one confirms that a purchase was worth less than its price.
