From Twenty-Nine Percent to Fifty-OneNarrow moat
Mastercard (MA) — moat facet
More than half of what Mastercard's network charges for carrying payments now goes back to the banks that bring them.
Look at the rebates over ten years and the direction is unmistakable. In 2015 Mastercard reported gross revenue of $13,647 million and rebates and incentives of $3,980 million1, about 29.2%2. By 2020 the ratio was 35.2% on the same basis34.
The company changed its presentation in 2021, so the later series is measured differently: rebates against gross payment network assessments only. On that basis the ratio was 46.4% in 2022 and 51.3% in 20255, with $20,522 million of rebates against $39,998 million of gross assessments67. In the second quarter of 2026 it reached about 52.4%8. More than half of what the network charges for carrying payments is now handed back to the banks that bring them.
Two readings are possible. The kind one is that rebates are an investment: long contracts, paid partly up front, that lock in volume for years, and Mastercard added back $2,098 million of amortisation of customer incentives in its 2025 cash flow9. The unkind one is that the network's pricing power is increasingly shared with its customers, and that the share keeps rising because each renewal resets it higher.
Both are true to a degree. Rebates grew about 5.2 times from 2015 to 2025 while net revenue grew about 3.4 times10. Growth that costs more each year to buy is still growth, but it is worth less.
The rise has been steady rather than sudden. On the payment network basis the ratio was 46.7% in 2021, 46.4% in 2022, 49.0% in 2023, 50.4% in 2024 and 51.3% in 202511. Each year the increase was one to three points. That steadiness is itself informative: it reflects contracts renewing on a rolling schedule, each at a slightly higher price, rather than a single bidding war. It also means the trend is unlikely to reverse quickly, because the contracts that set it run for years.
The level matters less than the slope. A ratio that stops rising for three years would say the price of winning banks has peaked; one that keeps rising means the moat's rent is being transferred, a point at a time, to the issuers.
The ratio rose from 46.4% in 2022 to 51.3% in 2025 and about 52.4% in Q2 2026.
The share of the network's toll handed back to issuers; a ratio that keeps rising means pricing power is moving to the banks.
