A Network Costs the Same at Ten Trillion or ElevenWide moat

Mastercard (MA) — moat facet

Mastercard's operating margin rose to 60% in the latest quarter, because carrying the next payment costs it almost nothing.

The single best number in Mastercard's accounts is the operating margin. It was 52.5% in 20151, 55.8% in 2023, 55.3% in 2024 and 57.6% in 20252, and 60.2% in the second quarter of 20263. A company that keeps widening its margin while handing more than half of its gross network fees back to banks has a very cheap machine.

Operating income ($M)5,07820156,62220177,28220189,66420198,081202012,264202218,8972025Mastercard Forms 10-K FY2017-FY2025; margin 52.5% in 2015, 57.6% in 2025
Operating income nearly quadrupled; the dips are litigation and the pandemic.

The reason is fixed cost. Carrying the next transaction costs almost nothing once the network, data centres and relationships exist. Net revenue grew from $9,667 million in 2015 to $32,791 million in 202545, and operating income from $5,078 million to $18,897 million over the same years67.

The margin has had bad years, and they are instructive. In 2018 it dipped to 48.7%8, largely because of a $1,128 million provision for litigation that included a $654 million charge for a European Commission fine9. The network did not become less efficient; the lawyers became more expensive.

The costs that do grow are people and litigation. Operating expenses rose 10% in the second quarter of 2026 while net revenue rose 14%10, so the gap is still widening.

The latest quarter shows the leverage clearly. Operating expenses were $3,690 million, up 10%, against net revenue of $9,277 million, up 14%11. That four-point gap turned into 17% operating income growth12. The first half repeated it: net income was $8,270 million and diluted earnings per share $9.3213. Few businesses of this size can grow costs by a tenth and profit by a sixth in the same quarter, and those that can usually own a network.

The margin is the best single test of whether the moat is holding, and it has not fallen in the latest figures. A sustained move back below 55% would say rebates or services mix are eating into the economics.

Moat trajectory: Widening

Operating margin reached 57.6% in 2025 and 60.2% in Q2 2026.

The number that tests this moat
Reported
Operating margin, latest quarter
60.2% (Q2 2026); 57.6% in 2025

The whole machine in one number; a fall below 55% would say rebates or services mix are diluting it.
