Capital Spending of 3.7% of RevenueWide moat
Mastercard (MA) — moat facet
Mastercard reinvests less than four cents of every revenue dollar, which is why nearly all of its profit is free to hand back.
What makes all of Mastercard's returns possible is how little it needs to invest. In 2025 it spent $489 million on property and equipment and $726 million on capitalised software1, a total of $1,215 million2, about 3.7% of net revenue of $32,791 million3. Operating cash flow was $17,648 million4, so free cash flow was about $16,433 million5.
A business like that can grow without asking its owners for anything. Net revenue compounded at about 13.0% a year from 2015 to 20256 while the company returned most of what it earned.
The return on invested capital shows the result, though the figure needs care. Computed from Mastercard's EDGAR filings it was 73.8% in 2025 and 95.1% in 20157. Buybacks have shrunk the capital base, so the ratio measures how little capital a card network needs as much as how profitable it is.
The one large capital outlay is acquisitions, and even those have been modest against earnings. Recorded Future's $2.7 billion8 was about a fifth of one year's net income.
The physical footprint is modest for a company of this reach. Property, equipment and right-of-use assets were $1,168 million in the United States and $1,135 million elsewhere at the end of 20259. Total assets were $54,157 million10, most of them cash, receivables, goodwill and intangibles rather than plant. A network that carries $10,632 billion of payments a year on about $2.3 billion of property11 is the purest example of a capital-light business in this collection.
The ratio to keep in view is capital spending against revenue. A move above 5% would say the network needs more reinvestment than it used to, perhaps for resilience or for new rails, and the free cash flow would shrink with it.
Capital spending has stayed near 4% of revenue.
The reinvestment the network needs; a rise above 5% would shrink free cash flow.
