Selling What the Network SeesNarrow moat

Mastercard (MA) — moat facet

Mastercard now earns 41% of its net revenue selling services built on the transactions it carries, and that half of the business grows twice as fast.

Value-added services and solutions are what Mastercard sells beyond carrying the payment, and they are now the growth engine. Net revenue from them was $13,315 million in 2025, up 23%1, against $10,832 million in 2024 and $9,274 million in 20232. In the second quarter of 2026 the line grew 20% to $3,826 million3, 41.2% of net revenue4.

Nearly two and a half times its 2020 size.

The filing lists the drivers of 2025 growth as growth in the underlying key drivers, security and digital and authentication solutions, consumer acquisition and engagement services, pricing, and business and market insights5. The first item matters: much of what Mastercard sells as a service is attached to the transaction, such as fraud scoring and authentication, so it grows with the network.

The advantage is the vantage point. Mastercard sees 175.5 billion transactions a year6, and a fraud model trained on that stream is hard for an outsider to match. The same data informs loyalty programmes, marketing services and consulting for banks and merchants.

Services also change the character of the company. Payment network revenue is fought over with rebates; services are sold, priced and renewed more like software. Rebates and incentives are attributed to the revenue category they relate to7, and payment network rebates alone were $20,522 million8, which suggests services carry far less of that burden.

The second-quarter call gave an example of what the vantage point produces. Mastercard said its threat intelligence had identified over 7 million card-testing transactions across 192 countries, preventing an estimated $172 million of fraud9. Card testing, in which criminals try stolen numbers with small purchases, is visible only to someone who sees many merchants and issuers at once. A bank sees its own cards; a merchant sees its own checkout; Mastercard sees the pattern across both, and sells the result back to them.

Services share of net revenue is the number to follow, 40.6% in 202510. If it stops rising, the second engine has stopped outgrowing the first, and the company's valuation would have to be justified by the network alone.

Moat trajectory: Widening

Services grew 23% in 2025 and 20% in Q2 2026, against 12% and 10% for the network.

The second engine; growth falling to the network's rate would say services are only riding volume.
