⚠ Acquisitions Add Three Points a YearLow threat
Mastercard (MA) — threat to the moat
About three points of Mastercard's services growth in 2025 came from companies it bought.
Mastercard has made its services business partly by purchase: Finicity for $809 million1, Ekata for $861 million2, Dynamic Yield for $325 million3, Recorded Future for $2.7 billion4, and an agreement in 2026 to buy BVNK for $1.5 billion5. In 2025 acquisitions added about three points to services growth6.
Bought growth is legitimate, but it changes the quality of the number. A 23% growth rate that includes three points of acquisitions is a 20% growth rate that needs another purchase to stay at 23%.
There is also a record of disposal. Dynamic Yield was acquired in 20227, and the second-quarter 2026 release mentions both acquisitions and dispositions in its operating-expense discussion8.
The deals have also had tails. Finicity came with up to $160 million of contingent consideration on top of the $809 million price9; BVNK carries up to $300 million of contingent consideration on top of $1.5 billion10. Contingent payments are sensible when the value of a small company is uncertain, and they are also a sign that Mastercard is buying capabilities rather than established businesses. Each purchase adds to growth in its first year and has to prove itself afterwards.
The simple test is services growth excluding acquisitions, which the filings describe but do not always quantify. A rate that falls below 15% would say the organic engine is slower than it looks.
