Vocalink and the Real-Time Rails It Also RunsNarrow moat
Mastercard (MA) — moat facet
Mastercard runs real-time payment rails in Britain and is building one for the United Arab Emirates, so it earns something even when the card is bypassed.
Mastercard does not only compete with real-time payments; in Britain it runs them. Vocalink, its real-time account-based payments platform, has been designated by the Bank of England as a specified service provider, and Mastercard as a recognised payment system1. The filing describes account-based payments as part of the business alongside cards2.
The strategy is to be present on every rail. Mastercard describes its aim as giving consumers choice across cards, real-time payments and account-based transactions3, and on the second-quarter 2026 call it described building switching technology for the United Arab Emirates' domestic payments infrastructure, with a similar partnership in South Africa4. The chief executive called it a "run anything, anywhere" technology strategy5.
That positions Mastercard well if national systems grow. It does not protect its margin. Running infrastructure for a central bank or a national scheme is a processing contract, and the customer is a public body with strong bargaining power.
It also brings regulation. The filing warns that operating a real-time account-based payments system brings risks, and that disruption could lead to intervention by the Bank of England and significant reputational damage6.
The strategy has a precedent inside Mastercard's own history. Local debit brands in many countries already use Mastercard's network for cross-border transactions while running the domestic ones themselves7. Building a country's domestic switch extends that arrangement: the country owns the rail, Mastercard supplies the technology and keeps the border. The chief executive described South Africa as another place where Mastercard built similar infrastructure8. Each contract turns a potential rival into a customer.
Revenue from these activities is not disclosed separately, so the proof would be new national switching contracts announced on results calls. Each one keeps Mastercard inside a payment flow it could otherwise lose; none of them earns what a card assessment earns.
New domestic switching projects in the UAE and South Africa.
Infrastructure work sits inside services; services growth holding near 20% while national rails spread would say the hedge is paying.
