⚠ Buying Back at Thirty Times EarningsLow threat

Mastercard (MA) — threat to the moat

Each dollar Mastercard spends on buybacks at 31 times earnings retires about three cents of annual profit.

Buybacks at a high multiple return less to the remaining shareholders. Mastercard's shares traded at about 31 times trailing earnings in September 20261, and at 33.7 to 37.5 times at the year-ends from 2022 to 20242. At 31 times, each dollar spent on buybacks retires about 3.2 cents of annual earnings3.

The buybacks have mostly been at 30 to 40 times earnings.

The alternative uses are limited. The company needs little capital, pays a modest dividend of $3.48 a year, a yield of 0.61%4, and its acquisitions have generally been small. Buybacks are the default.

The risk is that the multiple falls. A company that has spent heavily buying its own stock at 30 to 40 times earnings will have destroyed value for the sellers' counterparts if the shares re-rate to 20 times.

Analysts think the price is fair or better. The average price target was $666.71 in September 20265, against a share price of $566.086, and the 52-week range was $464.52 to $601.237. If the targets are right, buybacks at today's price are sensible. The test of the policy will come the first time the shares fall well below that range; a company that keeps buying through a decline shows conviction, one that stops shows it was buying momentum.

The quantity to watch is the multiple itself. Forward earnings of about 26.6 times8 are the current price of each dollar retired.
