⚠ Capacity May Outpace DemandModerate threat
GE Vernova (GEV) — threat to the moat
GE Vernova warns that its own capacity expansion may outpace the demand it was built for.
GE Vernova names the risk itself. Its 10-K warns that "our capacity expansions and related commitments may outpace realized demand"1. The factories being built for 30 gigawatts a year2 are sized to today's queue.
Turbine demand is tied to things the company does not control: data-centre construction, utility planning, gas prices and policy. GE Vernova's own counterparties, it notes, "may delay payment, seek to renegotiate terms, or default"3.
The history is short on a GE Vernova basis, but it is instructive. Gas turbine orders were 93 units in 2023 and 173 in 20254; a market that nearly doubled in two years can halve as quickly.
Orders in gigawatts show the same doubling as orders in units: 9.5 gigawatts in 2023, 20.2 in 2024 and 29.8 in 20255. Output of 30 gigawatts a year by 20306 would match the 2025 order level; it would exceed any earlier year's.
The capital committed is modest, which limits the damage. GE Vernova plans $6 billion of capex from 2025 to 20287, against contract liabilities of $39,944 million at June 20268. If the capacity proves too large, the loss would be in utilisation and margin rather than a stranded mountain of debt.
The early warning is gas turbine orders. The second quarter of 2026 brought 113 units9; a run of quarters below the 2023 pace while new capacity comes on line would mean the expansion has overshot.
