GE Vernova (GEV) — threat to the moat

GE Vernova earned $78 million before tax in the United States in 2025 on $17.3 billion of American revenue.

GE Vernova's pre-tax profit is almost entirely foreign. In 2025 it earned $78 million before tax in the United States and $2,750 million elsewhere1; the US share was 2.8%2. Yet the United States was $17,341 million of revenue, 45.6% of the total34, and grew 39.1% from 20235.

2025 pre-tax income ($M)78United States2,750Outside the USGE Vernova Form 10-K FY2025, income taxes note
Nearly all the profit is foreign.

Part of the explanation is where the losses sit: offshore wind and onshore wind are heavily American businesses, with the US about 60% of Onshore equipment RPO6. Part is where the corporate costs sit.

For the balance-sheet facet this matters because the tax valuation allowance released in 2025 was a US one7: the company is betting that American profits will now arrive.

The US figure has swung widely. Pre-tax income in the United States was minus $357 million in 2023, $1,285 million in 2024 and $78 million in 20258. The 2024 figure included the gain on the EDF sale, so neither year gives a clean view of what the American business earns.

American pre-tax income decides it. If it stays near zero in 2026 while American revenue keeps growing, the tax asset booked in 2025 will look optimistic.

The 21% tax rate used for NOPAT is the US federal statutory rate, an assumption, because the 2025 reported tax line is a benefit.
  6. ReportedPart of the explanation is where the losses sit: offshore wind and onshore wind are heavily American businesses, with the US about 60% of Onshore equipment RPO.
