Twenty Gigawatts a Year, Thirty by 2030Narrow moat
GE Vernova (GEV) — moat facet
GE Vernova plans to raise gas turbine output from 20 to 30 gigawatts a year by 2030 while spending only about 3% of revenue on capital.
A queue is only worth something if it can be served. GE Vernova expects to deliver 20 gigawatts of annual gas turbine output in the third quarter of 2026, 24 gigawatts in 2028 and is implementing actions to produce 30 gigawatts in 20301. In 2025 it sold 81 gas turbines totalling 15.3 gigawatts2.
The expansion is cheap relative to the order book. Capital spending was $1,277 million in 20253, 3.4% of revenue4, and the company has committed $6 billion of capex for 2025 through 2028 including $1 billion for Prolec GE5. That is a small outlay against $176 billion of backlog6.
The factories are also where the moat is physically held. About 70% of GE Vernova's roughly 75,000 employees specialise in manufacturing, engineering or services7; heavy-duty gas turbines are not something a new entrant can assemble from purchased parts.
The risk is timing. Output that arrives after the demand has faded would leave the company with capacity and no queue, a point the next danger takes up.
Capital spending is rising with the plan. Additions to property, plant and equipment and internal-use software were $744 million in 2023, $883 million in 2024 and $1,277 million in 20258, up 72% in two years9. Even so, capex remains a small share of revenue, which is why the expansion can be funded from deposits.
Shipments are the measure. Gas turbine sales were 15.3 gigawatts in 2025 against 11.9 in 202410; if 2027 shipments do not move toward 20 gigawatts, the promised capacity will not have arrived.
Gas turbine sales 11.9 GW (2024) to 15.3 GW (2025); 20 GW run rate from Q3 2026.
How fast the queue converts to revenue; shipments that do not approach 20 GW by 2027 would mean the capacity plan has slipped.
