Seven Thousand Turbines and the Service ContractsWide moat

GE Vernova (GEV) — moat facet

GE Vernova's real product is the decades of maintenance on 7,000 gas turbines, and that work produced 71% of its gross profit in 2025.

This is where GE Vernova's moat is widest. The company has installed about 7,000 gas turbines, 1,800 of them under long-term service agreements with about ten years left on average1, and about 59,000 onshore wind turbines2. Its installed base, it says, generates about a quarter of the world's electricity3.

Services share of gross profit (%)109%202384.2%202471.1%2025GE Vernova Form 10-K FY2025; above 100% in 2023 because equipment lost money; calculated
Falling because equipment recovered, not because services shrank.

The economics follow. Services were 45.0% of revenue in 2025 and 71.1% of gross profit4. In 2023, when equipment was sold below cost, services gross profit exceeded the company's entire gross profit5. Power services alone were $13,081 million6.

The backlog makes the annuity visible. Services remaining performance obligations were $85,993 million at the end of 20257, and 48% of them fall due more than five years out89. Those are non-cancellable obligations running into the 2040s.

The business is protected by what a power plant owner cannot easily change. The turbine is designed, certified and warrantied by GE Vernova; an unplanned outage costs a generator its revenue for the day; and the original maker holds the engineering data. Rivals can and do bid for the work, but they start behind.

Two things limit the facet. Most of the base, about three in four gas turbines, is not under a long-term agreement10, and the services margin has fallen from 35.1% to 31.3% in two years11.

The newest part of the fleet is the most valuable to service. GE Vernova counts 126 HA-class gas turbines installed, with about 3.6 million operating hours, and 51 more in its backlog12. HA orders rose from 8 units in 2023 to 25 in 2024 and 43 in 202513, so the installed base of its largest machines will grow by about 40% as the backlog ships14.

The Power backlog shows when the installed base began to grow again. Power RPO was $69,992 million in 2021, $70,934 million in 2022, $72,974 million in 2023 and $73,351 million in 2024151617: almost flat for four years. It then jumped to $94,387 million in 202518 and $111,649 million by June 202619. The service base was being maintained, not expanded, until the gas turbine orders arrived.

The facet is wide and stable. It would be in trouble if services revenue stopped growing while turbine shipments rose; 2025 services revenue was $17,134 million20, and the next annual figure should be higher.
