⚠ A Margin Built in a ShortageModerate threat
GE Vernova (GEV) — threat to the moat
GE Vernova's Electrification segment has never earned a profit outside a period of rising grid demand.
The Electrification margin is new and has not been through a downturn. It was negative in 2021 and 202212 and 3.7% as recently as 20233. Each profitable year so far, 2023 to 2025, was also a year in which the segment's backlog grew, from $8,971 million at the end of 2022 to $34,667 million45.
The competitors are large and many. GE Vernova names Hitachi Energy, Siemens Energy, Siemens, Schneider Electric, Mitsubishi Electric and ABB as key Electrification competitors6. Each is expanding to meet the same demand.
The backlog protects the next few years. Electrification RPO was $34,667 million at the end of 20257, about 3.6 years of 2025 segment revenue8, and much of it was priced in the shortage.
The 2022 figures show how fast the segment can swing. Revenue fell to $5,076 million that year and EBITDA was minus $164 million9, after minus $461 million in 202110. Three years later EBITDA was $1,433 million11; a reversal of similar speed is not implausible if the shortage ends.
What would falsify the margin is new orders priced lower than the backlog. The company's target is an Electrification backlog of $60 billion by 202812; if it reaches that on thinner margins, the 18% will not last.
