GE Vernova (GEV) — moat facet
GE Vernova leads the gas turbine market alongside two peers who are sold out too, while it retreats from wind and fights six rivals in grid equipment.
GE Vernova names its competitors segment by segment, and the lists say a great deal. In Power: Siemens Energy, Mitsubishi Power, Westinghouse, Framatome and Rolls-Royce. In Wind: Vestas, Siemens-Gamesa, Nordex, Envision and Goldwind. In Electrification: Hitachi Energy, Siemens Energy, Siemens, Schneider Electric, Mitsubishi Electric and ABB1.
The four relationships that matter are different in kind. In gas turbines there are two peers, Siemens Energy and Mitsubishi Power, and all three are sold out; Global Energy Monitor found the three supplying two-thirds of the turbines for gas plants under construction2. In wind GE Vernova is losing, and has chosen to shrink. In grid equipment it competes with six large names in a market short of capacity. And a set of substitutes, from fuel cells to engines to batteries, lives off the turbine queue itself.
The Bloom Energy and Vistra pages describe the turbine shortage from the buyer's side. What they show is that customers who cannot get a turbine in time are looking elsewhere; what this page shows is who they look at.
GE Vernova's own 10-K concedes the shift: with demand exceeding capacity, "we face growing competition from emerging threats"3. A third-party study put its share of the gas turbine market at over 18.5% in 2025, the largest of any maker4.
The competition is also regional. Global Energy Monitor estimated that GE Vernova held 38% of Asia's under-construction gas turbine market in 20245, and Europe was $7,594 million of GE Vernova's 2025 revenue, the Middle East and Africa $5,389 million6. A rival that is strong in one region can take share there without touching GE Vernova's position in the others, which is one reason no single competitor dominates all three segments.
The rivals are also expanding in nuclear. The 10-K lists Westinghouse, Framatome and Rolls-Royce among Power competitors7, three companies that compete with GE Vernova's Nuclear unit for new reactors. That contest is small in revenue today, $1,018 million for GE Vernova's Nuclear Power in 20258, but the order sizes in nuclear are large and few.
The competitive position is narrow and stable: strong in gas, weak in wind, contested in the grid. The number that would move it is the gas turbine market share, an estimate of 18.5% for 2025; if later studies show it falling while GE Vernova's order book is full, rivals will be taking the customers who cannot wait.
Gas turbine share over 18.5% (2025, estimate); wind orders shrinking; grid orders rising.
GE Vernova's hold on the market that carries the company; a fall while its order book is full would mean rivals are taking the customers who cannot wait.
