✦ The Future BetsNarrow moat
GE Vernova (GEV) — the future bets
GE Vernova's plan is to lift its margin from 8% to 20% by 2028, which depends on the shortage lasting that long.
GE Vernova's plan is a margin plan more than a growth plan. In January 2026 it set an outlook for 2028 of $56 billion of revenue, an adjusted EBITDA margin of 20% and cumulative free cash flow of at least $24 billion from 2025 to 20281. For 2026 it guides revenue of $45.5-46.5 billion and an adjusted EBITDA margin of 12% to 14%2.
Four bets carry it. The margin plan itself, which asks for Power and Electrification at 22% and Wind at 6%3. The services wave that should follow the turbines being sold now: the company expects "More profitable, recurring Gas Power services revenue beginning in the 2030s"4. Nuclear, a small unit with large ambitions. And a smaller, profitable wind business.
The plan is funded. The company has committed $6 billion of capex and $5 billion of R&D over 2025 to 20285, and the free cash flow target is well ahead of schedule: $9,897 million in the first half of 2026 alone6.
The risk is that the margin target depends on the shortage lasting until 2028. The backlog covers much of it, but the pricing in new orders will decide the last two years.
The backlog target shows the scale of the ambition. In December 2025 the company said it expected to grow total backlog from $135 billion to about $200 billion by the end of 2028, and to double the Electrification backlog from $30 billion to $60 billion7. By June 2026 total backlog was already $176.3 billion8, so the first target is more than halfway reached in six months.
The first half of 2026 shows the pace. Revenue of $20,442 million was 44% of the $46.0 billion midpoint910, and free cash flow of $9,897 million was 82% of the $12.0 billion midpoint1112. Revenue is on track; cash is well ahead.
These bets are narrow and widening. The 2026 revenue guide, a midpoint of $46.0 billion13, is the near-term test; the company has raised it three times this year14, and a cut would be the first sign the 2028 plan is slipping.
2026 revenue guide raised three times, to $45.5-46.5bn.
The near-term test of the plan; a cut would be the first sign 2028 is slipping.
