U.S. Consumer ServicesWide moat

American Express (AXP) — moat facet

U.S. Consumer Services has more than doubled its revenue since 2020 while its pretax margin stayed near a fifth, because the rewards bill grew with it.

U.S. Consumer Services is the largest business at American Express and the one where the premium card lives. It earned revenue net of interest expense of $34,814 million in 2025 and pretax income of $6,810 million1: about 48% of the four segments' revenue and about 42% of their pretax income2.

Revenue more than doubled in five years.

The segment issues "proprietary consumer cards" to U.S. consumers, offers banking and non-card financing products, and "also manages our dining platform"3, the Resy and Tock business. Its revenue comes from three sources. It books the issuer's share of the discount revenue on its cardholders' spending, under the transfer pricing Amex uses between segments4; it collects the annual card fees; and it earns interest on card loans. Its cardholders spent $707.5 billion in 2025, up 8%, an average of $21,215 per proprietary card5.

The history on today's segment basis begins in 2020, when the four segments were recast6. Revenue was $16,347 million in 2020, $18,922 million in 2021 and $23,914 million in 20227, then $28,116 million in 2023 and $31,427 million in 20248. It has more than doubled in five years, about 2.1 times9.

Profit has grown less steadily. The pretax margin was about 19.0% in 2020, about 31.5% in 2021 when reserves were released, about 22.6% in 2022, and about 19.3%, 20.3% and 19.6% in 2023, 2024 and 202510. In other words, revenue has grown fast and the margin has stayed near a fifth. That is where the rewards bill shows up: rewards, business development and Card Member services grew with the revenue, and the segment's profit grew only as fast as its revenue.

The segment is also where the premium strategy is most visible. The company says its "Platinum portfolio is now the fastest growing in our U.S. Consumer business"11, and the Platinum refresh launched at the end of the third quarter of 202512. In the second quarter of 2026 the segment's revenue was $9,524 million and its pretax income $2,065 million, up from $1,676 million a year earlier, about 23%1314. Its billed business grew 11%15.

The segment carries the most exposure to the U.S. consumer. It holds most of the card loans that pay interest and most of the cardholders whose spending falls in a downturn, as it did in 2020, when the segment's pretax income was $3,103 million16.

The segment is also where the company is investing in things that are not cards. It runs the dining platform and is "integrating the Tock and Rooam acquisitions" into it17, and the Future Bets page on dining covers the plan to add TheFork in Europe. Those businesses earn little on their own; their value is in giving the segment's premium cardholders something a rival card cannot offer.

The outlook depends on whether the refresh pays for itself. Fee growth, spending growth and a pretax margin near a fifth have held together for three years. A pretax margin below 18% for a full year, with spending still growing, would mean the Platinum benefits were costing more than they earned, and the largest business in the company had started to buy its growth.

Moat trajectory: Holding steady

Revenue $16.3bn (2020) to $34.8bn (2025); pretax margin about 20%; Q2 2026 pretax +23%.

The largest segment's profit after the Platinum refresh; a full year at a margin below 18% would mean the refresh was buying growth.
