Thirty Quarters of Double-Digit GrowthWide moat

American Express (AXP) — moat facet

American Express card fees have grown by double digits for more than seven straight years, pandemic included, which is what a membership looks like in the accounts.

American Express's card fees have grown with unusual regularity. At the end of 2025 the company reported that net card fee revenues "grew double digits" for a 30th consecutive quarter1, and the streak continued in 2026 with growth of 15% in the second quarter2.

Net card fees ($M)3,09020174,04220195,19520216,07020227,25520238,44920249,9932025American Express Forms 10-K FY2019, FY2023 and FY2025
Three times the 2017 figure in eight years.

The annual figures show it. Net card fees were $3,090 million in 20173, $5,195 million in 20214, $7,255 million in 2023 and $9,993 million in 20255. The yearly increases from 2022 to 2025 were about 17%, 20%, 16% and 18%6.

The fee line has become a much larger part of the company. It was about 9% of revenue in 2019 and about 14% in 20257. Card fees are the highest-quality revenue Amex has: collected in advance, unrelated to how much the cardholder borrows, and far less sensitive to the economy than spending.

The streak runs through the pandemic. In 2020, when billed business fell to $870.7 billion from $1,070.5 billion8, net card fees still rose, to $4,664 million from $4,042 million, and the average fee per card went from $58 to $679. People travelled less and kept paying for the card anyway.

That resilience is the strongest evidence that the card is a membership rather than a payment tool. Customers pay for status, service and benefits they expect to use later, and they are reluctant to give those up in a bad year.

The company expects the streak to continue through 2026. On the second-quarter call it guided to card-fee growth in the high teens as a fourth-quarter exit rate10, which, if delivered, would extend the streak through 2026. The refresh of U.S. Consumer and Business Platinum at the end of the third quarter of 202511 is the main reason.

The streak is a public promise now, and the company reports it every quarter. The first quarter of single-digit growth would not end the moat, but it would say that the pool of customers willing to pay more each year had begun to run dry; growth that slipped below 10% while benefit costs kept rising faster would be the real signal.

Moat trajectory: Widening

Net card fees $5,195M (2021) to $9,993M (2025); +15% in Q2 2026.
