One Hundred and Thirty-One Dollars a CardWide moat

American Express (AXP) — moat facet

The average American Express cardholder now pays $131 a year before buying anything, more than twice the 2019 figure.

Cardholders now pay American Express more each year for the right to carry the card, and the average keeps climbing. The average fee per card was $49 in 2017 and $58 in 201912, $82 in 20223 and $117 in 20254. In the second quarter of 2026 it reached $1315, about 2.26 times the 2019 figure6.

The fee per card has risen every year, pandemic included.

That average blends free cards with some very expensive ones, and Amex does not disclose how many of each it has. What moves the average is the mix: more cardholders choosing fee-paying products, and higher fees on the cards they already hold. The company says its "Platinum portfolio is now the fastest growing in our U.S. Consumer business"7, a sign that the most expensive card is also the one gaining share.

A fee is the cleanest evidence of a moat a card company can offer. A customer who pays a few hundred dollars a year before buying anything has decided the card is worth more than the free ones every bank offers. And the fee arrives whatever the cardholder spends, which makes it steadier than the merchant discount.

The fee also locks the cardholder in for a year at a time. Having paid, most cardholders try to get their money's worth by using the card and its benefits, which feeds the spending that merchants pay for.

The catch is what the fee buys. Much of the recent increase came alongside richer benefits, and the cost of those benefits sits on another page, Card Member Services Tripled. A fee that rises because the card got better is only as profitable as the difference between the two.

The fee has also become a larger part of what each card brings in. Net card fees were $9,993 million in 2025 against discount revenue of $37,401 million8, about 27% of it9; in 2019 the figure was about 15%10. The cardholder is paying a growing share of the cost of the loop.

The average fee is the figure to follow each quarter. It rose from $103 in 2024 to $117 in 202511, about 14%12. If it stopped rising while Card Member services expense kept growing, Amex would be giving away more than it was charging for, and the fee would have become the price of admission rather than the source of profit.

Moat trajectory: Widening

What cardholders pay to belong; a stall while benefit costs kept rising would mean the fee had become the price of the benefits.
