The second quarter of 2026 showed American Express growing faster than at any time in three years, and paying more for it. Revenue net of interest expense was $19,637 million, up 10%1. Billed business was $455.8 billion, up 9%, "the highest rate we've seen in three years on an FX-adjusted basis"2.

The U.S. consumer business carried the quarter.

Every revenue line grew. Discount revenue was $10,163 million, up 9%; net card fees $2,862 million, up 15%; net interest income $4,649 million, up 11%3. The company raised its full-year revenue growth guidance to 10% and kept earnings guidance at $17.30 to $17.904.

Costs grew faster. Total expenses were $14,482 million, up 12%5. Card Member rewards were $5,051 million, business development $1,755 million and Card Member services $1,949 million, up 50%6. The three incentive lines came to about 86% of discount revenue, against about 80% a year earlier7.

Credit helped. Provisions were $1,084 million against $1,405 million a year earlier, a reserve release8, and the principal net write-off rate on consumer and small-business card balances was 2.0%9.

Pretax income was $4,071 million, up 15%, and net income $3,110 million, up 8%10, the difference being a tax rate of 23.6% against 18.7% a year earlier, when discrete tax benefits helped11. Diluted earnings per share were $4.53 against $4.0812.

By segment, U.S. Consumer Services earned $2,065 million before tax against $1,676 million, up about 23%1314; Commercial Services $970 million; International Card Services $477 million; and Global Merchant and Network Services $1,128 million15. Return on equity was 36.4%16, and the company returned $2,887 million to shareholders17.

The first half as a whole was stronger than the second quarter alone suggests. Revenue for the six months was $38,544 million, up 11%18, and the company returned $5,202 million to shareholders, including $3,905 million of share repurchases and $1,297 million of dividends19. It repurchased 7.1 million shares in the quarter at an average of $315.7720. Shares outstanding fell to 675 million from 682 million at the end of March21.

The segment figures also show where the growth came from. U.S. consumer billed business grew 11%, commercial 5% and international 13%22. The company said it acquired 3 million new cards in the quarter23, and proprietary cards-in-force reached 87.6 million24.

The quarter's tension is the Platinum refresh: fees up 15% and benefit costs up 50%. The third quarter will show whether that gap narrows as the refresh laps; Card Member services growth above 40% again would mean the benefits were costing more than the launch alone explains.
