Global Merchant and Network ServicesWide moat

American Express (AXP) — moat facet

The network half of the American Express loop takes a tenth of the revenue and earns a quarter of the profit, at about 51% before tax.

Global Merchant and Network Services is the part of American Express that runs the network. It "operates a global payments network that processes and settles card transactions, acquires merchants" and manages the partnerships with third-party card issuers and acquirers1. It earned revenue net of interest expense of $7,759 million in 2025 and pretax income of $3,968 million2: about 11% of the four segments' revenue and about 25% of their pretax income3.

Three times the 2020 profit; 2024 flattered by the Accertify sale.

That margin, about 51%4, comes from the way Amex divides its discount revenue. Under its transfer pricing, discount revenue in this segment "generally reflects the network and acquirer component", while the card segments book "the issuer component"5. The segment also receives a funding credit: its interest expense was a negative $661 million in 20256, which is why net interest income adds to its revenue. The margin is therefore partly an accounting allocation, but it reflects something real: running an established network costs little for each extra transaction.

Revenue on the four-segment basis was $4,309 million in 2020, $5,129 million in 2021 and $6,475 million in 20227, then $7,396 million in 2023 and $7,484 million in 20248, about 1.8 times in five years9. Pretax income was $1,294 million in 2020, $1,874 million in 2021 and $2,954 million in 202210, then $3,656 million in 2023, $4,398 million in 2024 and $3,968 million in 202511.

The 2024 figure included a one-off: Amex sold Accertify in the second quarter of 2024 for a gain of $531 million, $479 million after tax12. Without it, 2024 pretax income would have been about $3,867 million13, and 2025 was about 3% higher14.

The segment is where acceptance is won. Amex said in September 2026 that its card was accepted at more than 190 million merchant locations, up about 20 million in the year15. Every location is signed at a price, and the price has been falling: discount revenue was 2.24% of billed business in 202516.

The company also holds an equity stake in, and has commercial arrangements with, Global Business Travel Group17, and it sponsors entertainment such as Formula 1 for its cardholders18. Such relationships support the network's reach without showing up as merchant fees.

The legal challenges to the merchant rules also land here. Merchants have sued over the anti-steering and non-discrimination provisions in Amex's merchant agreements19, the terms that stop a merchant from steering customers to a cheaper card. A ruling against them would reach the network and acquirer share of the fee first.

Q2 2026 also showed the segment's steadiness. Its pretax income of $1,128 million was up about 7% on a year earlier2021, against 23% in U.S. Consumer Services, because the network earns on volume while the card segments also earn on fees and interest.

In the second quarter of 2026 revenue was $2,096 million and pretax income $1,128 million, against $1,054 million a year earlier22. The outlook is steady rather than fast: network volume grows with spending and the margin is already high. A pretax margin below 45% for a year, without a one-off cause, would mean the network half of the closed loop was losing its pricing faster than volume could replace it.

Moat trajectory: Holding steady

Pretax margin about 51% (2025); pretax income $3,968M, about 3% above 2024 excluding the Accertify gain.
