Commercial ServicesNarrow moat
American Express (AXP) — moat facet
Commercial cardholders spend the most per card at American Express, and the commercial business grows the slowest.
Commercial Services is the American Express business for companies: "proprietary corporate and small business cards" and "payment and expense management" services1. It earned revenue net of interest expense of $16,926 million in 2025 and pretax income of $3,668 million2, about 23% of the four segments' revenue and 23% of their pretax income3.
Its customers spend the most per card. Average proprietary basic Card Member spending was $35,153 in 2025, against $21,215 for U.S. consumers4. The segment's billed business was $541.9 billion in 20255. Across the company, spending by small business and corporate clients was about 41% of worldwide billed business6.
The revenue comes from the same three sources as the consumer business: the issuer's share of discount revenue, card fees and net interest income. The mix leans toward spending: of $218,054 million of card balances in June 2026, corporate cards accounted for $16,908 million and small-business cards $56,172 million7, against $144,974 million for consumers.
On the current four-segment basis revenue was $9,234 million in 2020, $10,911 million in 2021 and $13,569 million in 20228, then $14,776 million in 2023 and $15,859 million in 20249, about 1.8 times in five years10. Pretax income moved more: $1,013 million in 2020, $2,936 million in 2021 and $2,880 million in 202211, then $2,861 million, $3,505 million and $3,668 million12. The pretax margin was about 11% in 2020 and about 21.7% in 202513.
The weakness is growth. Commercial billed business grew 3% in 202514 and 5% in the second quarter of 202615, the slowest of the three card segments. The company says it expects "a moderation in spend growth as we exit small business cobrand held-for-sale portfolios"16, meaning the Amazon and Lowe's small-business cards17. It is piloting an expense management platform for middle-market customers18.
The segment is also the one most sensitive to business travel. Corporate cards carry airline and hotel spending, and airline spending alone was about 6% of worldwide billed business in 202519.
The segment has a history of friction with regulators. Investigations into small-business sales practices by several authorities were resolved for about $230 million in total20. The segment's customers are also the ones most tied to business travel, and the page Premium Spending in a Recession shows what happened to that spending in 2020.
The disposals will shape the next year. The Amazon and Lowe's small-business cobrand portfolios had been reclassified to held for sale21, with card balances held for sale of $2,457 million at the end of 202522. Once they are gone, the segment's growth will rest entirely on Amex's own commercial cards and the middle-market platform.
In the second quarter of 2026 revenue was $4,503 million and pretax income $970 million, against $905 million a year earlier23. The outlook rests on the middle market. If billed business growth stayed below 5% after the held-for-sale portfolios were gone, the segment with the best customers would have become the one with the fewest new ones, and its 21.7% margin would be defending a shrinking share of the company.
Revenue $9.2bn (2020) to $16.9bn (2025); billed business +3% (2025), +5% (Q2 2026).
The profit of the commercial business; growth stuck below the consumer segment would mean the best customers were the slowest to grow.
