A Bank Built for SpendersNarrow moat

American Express (AXP) — moat facet

American Express lends to people it already knows spend heavily, funds them with deposits and holds just enough capital, which is how a card company earns a third on equity.

American Express is a bank holding company, and the balance sheet is where the moat's value is collected. It held Card Member loans of $151,832 million and receivables of $62,031 million at the end of 2025, funded mainly by $152,488 million of customer deposits and $56,387 million of long-term debt1. Shareholders' equity was $33,474 million2.

Lending grew faster than spending.

Three features make that balance sheet unusually productive. The funding is mostly deposits, so net interest income hardly moves with rates: a 100-basis-point rise would add about $19 million a year3. The borrowers are chosen for spending, so losses are low: the principal write-off rate on card loans was 2.2% in 20254. And capital is held at the middle of a 10 to 11 percent target range5, so almost everything earned beyond growth is returned.

The result is a return on equity of 33.9% in 20256 and 36.4% in the second quarter of 20267, against an assumed cost of equity of about 10%.

The balance sheet has also become a bigger part of the business. Net interest income was about 19.8% of revenue in 2019 and about 24.0% in 20258. Loans grew faster than spending: Card Member loans rose about 74% from 2019 to 2025 while billed business rose about 56%9. Amex is still a spending company first, but less so than it was.

The pages below cover the rate neutrality, the loss rate, the return on equity and the buybacks.

The capital return is the other side of the lean balance sheet. American Express returned $7.9 billion in 2024 and $7.6 billion in 20251011, and dividends per share rose from $1.13 in 201512 to $3.28 in 202513.

Book value per share was $46.45 at the end of 2025 and $48.42 in June 20261415, and at $305.50 the shares traded at about 6.3 times it1617. That multiple is the market's price for the return on equity, and it is only justified while the return stays near a third.

The shape of the book also limits the risk. Card Member receivables, balances due in full each month, were $62,031 million at the end of 202518, about 29% of total card loans and receivables19. A lender whose book is partly charge cards has less revolving debt at risk than a lender of the same size whose customers borrow on every card.

On its own this would be a narrow moat; in combination with the loop and the fee it is a wide one. A bank that lends to its own heavy spenders at a 2% loss rate, funded by deposits, is a good bank; it is the closed loop and the fee that make it a great one. The loss rate is the falsifier, and a principal write-off rate above 3% outside a recession would mean the lending had outgrown the franchise that selects the borrowers.

Moat trajectory: Holding steady

ROE 33.9% (2025); write-off rate 2.2%; NII +$19M for +100bp.

The growing lending book; loans outgrowing billed business year after year would mean a spending franchise becoming a lender.
