◆ What the Market Isn't Pricing In

Wells Fargo (WFC) — the variant view

Wells Fargo has the cheapest deposits of the three largest banks and the lowest multiple, and the discount looks more like memory than analysis.

The market prices Wells Fargo below the other three largest American banks, and its funding says it should not be. In September 2026 the shares traded at 11.9 times earnings, against 14.7 for JPMorgan, 14.2 for Citigroup and 12.9 for Bank of America1, and at 1.79 times tangible book value2. Yet Wells Fargo paid about 1.52% for its deposits in 2025, less than either34.

Below where it stood before the cap.

The discount has a long memory. Wells Fargo was worth $298.75 billion at the end of 20175, just before the cap, and $250.90 billion in September 20266, about 16% less7, even though its share count has fallen by more than a third since 20168.

Some of the discount is earned. The efficiency ratio was 66% in 20259, and the new balance sheet has gone mostly into trading and corporate loans.

What the market may be missing is how much of the discount belongs to the past. The asset cap is gone, fourteen consent orders are closed10, and the return on tangible common equity reached 17.7% in the second quarter of 202611, level with Bank of America's 17.0%12.

The shares fell from $292.56 billion of market value at the end of 202513 to $250.90 billion, while the quarterly return rose. The market may be pricing the growth as trading growth and the franchise as the one that needed a cap.

Analysts are more optimistic than the price. Analysts rate the stock a buy, with an average target of $100.4614, against a 52-week range of $72.78 to $97.7615. The dividend of $2.00 a year yields 2.41%16, and the payout ratio is 29.07%17, which leaves most of the earnings for growth or buybacks.

Earnings have been rising while the price fell. Trailing twelve-month net income was $22,610 million in June 202618, against $21,338 million for 202519. On those earnings the market value of $250.90 billion is about 11 times20.

The book the market prices has barely grown. Tangible common equity was $135.6 billion at the end of 2024 and $139.7 billion in June 20262122, so the rise in returns has not yet been turned into a larger equity base for the multiple to apply to.

A full year at a 17% return would test that view. If the multiple stayed below Bank of America's after it, the market would be ignoring a bank that had caught up.
