Tangible Equity Has Not GrownNarrow moat

Wells Fargo (WFC) — moat facet

Part of Wells Fargo's rising return comes from running the same equity against a much larger balance sheet.

Wells Fargo's return on tangible equity is rising, and part of the reason is that the equity is not. Tangible common equity was $135.6 billion at the end of 2024, $139.1 billion in June 2025, $139.2 billion at the end of 2025 and $139.7 billion in June 202612. Over the same eighteen months total assets grew about 18%3.

The equity is flat while the assets grew.

Buybacks explain it. The bank earned $11,660 million in the first half of 20264 and repurchased about $7 billion of stock5, on top of dividends.

The result is a higher return from a thinner layer of equity. Return on tangible common equity was 13.4% in 2024, 14.6% in 20256 and 17.7% in the second quarter of 20267.

That is a legitimate way to raise returns while capital rules allow it. It is not the same as a better bank, because leverage raises the return on bad years as well as good ones.

The share count fell by 191.9 million, or 6%, in the year to June 20268, which is where the retained earnings went.

Common stockholders' equity was $165.0 billion in June 2026, against $164.6 billion a year earlier9, while the balance sheet grew by 15%.

The bank now supports a larger balance sheet with less equity than it had when the cap was imposed. Total stockholders' equity was $206,936 million at the end of 2017 and $180,190 million in June 202610, about 13% less11, while total assets were about 17% higher12.

Preferred stock fills part of the space between the two figures. Total stockholders' equity was $180,190 million in June 202613 against common equity of $165.0 billion14; the difference is mostly preferred stock, which cost $1,053 million in dividends and related items in 202515 and counts toward capital without counting toward the common return. The common shareholders own a thinner slice than the headline equity suggests.

Tangible common equity against total assets is the check, about 6.1% in June 202616. If it kept falling, more of the improvement in returns would be leverage rather than the franchise.

Moat trajectory: Holding steady

Tangible common equity $135.6bn (Dec 2024) to $139.7bn (June 2026) while assets grew 18%.
