Wells Fargo (WFC) — the future bets

Wells Fargo's card and auto push is the one growth bet that uses its cheap deposits directly.

The consumer loans that best use cheap deposits are cards and car loans, and Wells Fargo is pushing both. New credit card accounts were 2,429 thousand in 2024 and 2,930 thousand in 2025, up 21%1, and up 46% year on year in the second quarter of 20262. Auto originations rose 41% in the quarter3.

Card growth accelerating.

Revenue is following. Credit card revenue was $5,809 million in 2023, $5,908 million in 2024 and $6,375 million in 20254. Auto revenue fell from $1,464 million in 2023 to $1,016 million in 20255, then rose 33% in the second quarter of 2026 to $320 million6.

This is the growth that fits the moat. A card or car loan funded at a deposit cost of about 1.52%7 earns a wide spread, and the customers are often already in the bank.

It also brings losses. The consumer net loan charge-off rate was 0.74% in the second quarter8, and new card accounts take a year or two to show their true loss rate.

Credit card revenue was $1,614 million in the second quarter of 20269, and CNBC reported that the bank wanted to grow in "credit cards, wealth management and commercial banking" once the cap was lifted10.

Card spending is already large: debit and credit card purchase volume together came to about $716.5 billion in 20251112, and card fees were $4,589 million13.

Card revenue lags the accounts. Credit card revenue rose about 8% in 20251415 while new accounts rose 21%16, because new cards earn little until balances build. The revenue from the 2025 accounts lies mostly ahead, and so do their losses.

Auto went the other way before it turned. Revenue fell about 31% from $1,464 million in 2023 to $1,016 million in 20251718 as the bank pulled back, and only in 2026 did the originations return. The turn is recent.

The proof will come as the new accounts age. If the consumer charge-off rate rose well above 1% as the new accounts matured, the growth would have been bought with credit.

Moat trajectory: Widening

New card accounts +46%, auto originations +41% in Q2 2026.

The auto lending comeback; a fall back below the 2025 run-rate would mean the push had stalled.
