⚠ The Moat Got the Smallest ShareLow threat
Wells Fargo (WFC) — threat to the moat
The consumer bank that built Wells Fargo's deposit moat has taken the smallest share of the growth since the cap.
The cheap deposits come mostly from households, but the new lending went mostly to companies. Of the $109.8 billion rise in average loans in the year to the second quarter of 2026, $73.5 billion was in Corporate and Investment Banking123.
Consumer Banking and Lending revenue was $10,288 million in the second quarter4. Its return on allocated capital rose to 27.1% from 16.4% a year earlier5, so the consumer bank is earning more, but mainly on the same balances.
A bank's deposit moat is only as valuable as the loans it funds. If Wells Fargo keeps putting new capital into wholesale businesses, the franchise that survived the cap will be a smaller share of the company each year.
The consumer bank's deposits grew 3% in the year to the second quarter of 20266, against 16% in Corporate and Investment Banking7.
Within the consumer bank the mortgage book is shrinking; lower residential mortgage loans partly offset loan growth elsewhere in the second quarter8.
Home Lending, once the core of the consumer business, is still shrinking. Its revenue was $762 million in the second quarter of 2026, down 7%, while Auto rose 33% to $320 million9. The consumer bank is changing what it lends on the same deposits rather than lending much more of them.
The capital went where the assets went. Corporate and Investment Banking had $44.0 billion of allocated capital at the end of 2025, against $6.5 billion in Wealth and Investment Management10, and its period-end assets rose from $597,278 million to $787,751 million during the year11, about 32%12.
A steady fall in the consumer bank's share of total revenue, about 45% in the second quarter13, would say the bank was drifting away from its moat.
