Corporate and Investment BankingNarrow moat
Wells Fargo (WFC) — moat facet
Wells Fargo's investment bank is its cheapest segment to run and the one taking most of the balance sheet the cap released.
Corporate and Investment Banking is Wells Fargo's wholesale bank and the main destination of its new balance sheet. It produced revenue of $19,232 million and net income of $7,283 million in 20251, about 23% of the four segments' revenue and 34% of company net income2.
It has three parts. Banking, which is lending, treasury management and investment banking, produced $7,037 million in 2025; Commercial Real Estate $5,083 million; and Markets, fixed income and equities trading, $7,061 million34.
The lines have moved in different directions. Investment banking revenue rose from $1,404 million in 2023 to $2,008 million in 2025, and Markets from $6,562 million to $7,061 million; treasury management fell from $3,036 million to $2,507 million, and lending from $2,872 million to $2,522 million5.
The history shows a step. Revenue was $13,928 million in 2020 and $15,242 million in 202267, then $19,191 million in 20238, and it has been flat since.
This is the most efficient segment. Its efficiency ratio was 49% in 20259 and 46% in the second quarter of 202610. Return on allocated capital was 13.8% in 2023 and 15.6% in 202511, and 19.2% in the second quarter12.
After the cap the segment grew fastest. Its total assets were $862,472 million in June 2026, up 31% in a year13, and quarterly revenue was $5,425 million, up 16%14. Markets revenue in the quarter was $2,206 million and total Banking $2,013 million15.
Revenue is growing more slowly than the balance sheet. In the second quarter of 2026 segment revenue rose 16%16 while CIB average loans rose 26%17. Commercial real estate, the second-largest line, is being watched: the quarter's provision was helped by "a lower allowance for commercial real estate loans"18.
The markets business splits between fixed income and equities. Fixed income, currencies and commodities produced $4,688 million in 2023, $5,093 million in 2024 and $5,292 million in 2025; equities $1,809 million, $1,789 million and $1,738 million19. In the second quarter of 2026 fixed income produced $1,536 million and equities $635 million20.
The segment's 2025 revenue split between net interest income of $7,557 million and noninterest income of $11,675 million21, the most fee-heavy of the lending segments. Commercial real estate revenue was $5,083 million in 2025, against $5,311 million in 202322, and $1,197 million in the second quarter of 202623.
Profit is growing faster than revenue. Net income was $2,329 million in the second quarter of 2026, $592 million more than a year earlier24, and treasury management and payments revenue rose 5%25.
The verdict on the growth will come from return on allocated capital. If it held above 17% for a full year on the larger balance sheet, the bank will have grown into a profitable business; a fall toward 14% would mean it grew into a crowded one.
Total assets +31% in a year; ROAC 19.2% in Q2 2026.
The revenue from the fastest-growing balance sheet; revenue growing slower than assets would mean a falling return.
