Consumer Banking and LendingWide moat

Wells Fargo (WFC) — moat facet

Wells Fargo's consumer bank produces 44% of segment revenue and funds the whole company with cheap deposits.

Consumer Banking and Lending is the business that holds Wells Fargo's moat. It produced revenue of $37,362 million and net income of $7,865 million in 20251, about 44% of the four segments' revenue and 37% of company net income2. It held $828.4 billion of the bank's average deposits in the second quarter of 20263.

Two-thirds of the segment is the checking account.

Inside it are five lines. Consumer, Small and Business Banking, the checking and savings accounts and small-business lending, produced $25,427 million in 2025; Credit Card $6,375 million; Home Lending $3,364 million; Auto $1,016 million; and Personal Lending $1,180 million4.

The segment earns mostly from spread. Net interest income was $29,183 million and noninterest income $8,179 million in 20255. The deposit spread on the consumer and small-business accounts was 2.58%6.

History shows a business that moves with rates, not with competition. Revenue was $34,016 million in 2020 and $34,877 million in 20217, rose to $37,919 million in 2023, and slipped to $36,201 million in 2024 before recovering8. The 2020 result was hit by the pandemic: net income was $1,076 million9.

Profitability is good and improving. Return on allocated capital was 16.7% in 202510 and 27.1% in the second quarter of 2026, with an efficiency ratio of 61%11. Quarterly revenue was $10,288 million, up 6%12.

The mix is shifting within the segment. Credit card revenue grew about 10% from 2023 to 2025, while Auto fell about 31%13; both are now growing again, with card accounts up 46% and auto originations up 41% in the quarter14.

Most of the bank's credit risk sits here. The segment's provision for credit losses was $3,362 million in 2025, about 92% of the bank's total of $3,658 million1516, because cards and car loans carry most of the losses. Its efficiency ratio improved to 61% in the second quarter of 2026 from 64% a year earlier17.

In the third quarter of 2025 about $8 billion of loans and $6 billion of deposits were moved into this segment from Commercial Banking without restating earlier years18, so part of its recent growth is a transfer.

The segment's economics show where the moat pays. In 2025 it spent $23,515 million, set aside $3,362 million for credit losses and earned pre-tax income of $10,485 million19. Its average deposits were $779,994 million and average loans $322,052 million20, so it had almost two and a half dollars of deposits for every dollar it lent; the rest funds the other segments.

The latest quarter shows the lines moving apart. Consumer, Small and Business Banking produced $7,308 million, up 8%; Credit Card $1,614 million; Home Lending $762 million, down 7%; Auto $320 million, up 33%; and Personal Lending $284 million21. Net income was $2,290 million22. Before the current segments existed, the old Community Banking segment earned $10,818 million in 201623.

The latest quarter showed operating leverage on the same balances. Net income rose 19% to $2,290 million on revenue up 6%, while noninterest expense rose 2% to $6,286 million and the provision was unchanged at $945 million24.

The segment's return on allocated capital is the verdict on the moat. A year back near 15% with rates steady would mean the cheap deposits were being spent on losses or costs; a year above 20% would confirm this is where Wells Fargo earns its keep.
