Investment Banking Fees Up 43 PercentNarrow moat

Wells Fargo (WFC) — moat facet

Wells Fargo's investment banking fees rose 43% in two years, sold mainly to companies that already bank there.

Wells Fargo has been building an investment bank on top of its corporate lending, and the fees show it. Investment banking revenue in the CIB segment was $1,404 million in 2023, $1,814 million in 2024 and $2,008 million in 20251, up about 43% in two years2. In the second quarter of 2026 it was $628 million, up 36%3.

Two years of steady gains.

The bank points to its rankings. Its merger ranking rose from 12th to 8th in 20254, and in 2026 it reported an announced American M&A deal volume rank of fourth, up from ninth, and a leveraged finance share of 7.2%, third overall5.

These fees rest on relationships the bank already had. A company that borrows from Wells Fargo and keeps its cash there is a natural client for a bond issue or an acquisition.

They are also cyclical. A year without deals would take much of the gain away, and advisory rankings move with a few large mandates.

The company-wide fee figure is larger because it counts fees earned outside the segment. Investment banking fees were $3,027 million in 20256, and rose $143 million, or 18%, from the first to the second quarter of 2026 on higher debt and equity underwriting7.

Investment banking has become a larger part of the segment. It was about 7% of CIB revenue in 2023 and about 10% in 202589.

The relationship business underneath is not growing. Treasury management and payments revenue in the segment fell from $3,036 million in 2023 to $2,507 million in 202510, and lending revenue from $2,872 million to $2,522 million11. The investment bank is being built on top of a franchise whose steadier fees are drifting down.

Investment banking was about 12% of CIB revenue in the second quarter of 2026, $628 million of $5,425 million1213, up from about 10% for 2025. The share is rising within a growing segment.

If investment banking fees fell back toward the 2023 level in an ordinary year for deals, the climb would have been the market rather than the franchise.

Moat trajectory: Widening

IB revenue $1,404M (2023) to $2,008M (2025); M&A rank 12th to 8th.

The advisory and underwriting business; a fall toward the 2023 run-rate in a normal deal year would mean the gains were cyclical.
