Bank of America: The Peer It Now MatchesNarrow moat
Wells Fargo (WFC) — moat facet
Wells Fargo now earns as much on its equity as Bank of America, from cheaper deposits and a costlier bank.
Bank of America is the rival most like Wells Fargo, and the comparison has turned. In 2025 Bank of America earned a return on tangible common equity of 14.22%1, below Wells Fargo's 14.6%2. In the second quarter of 2026 it earned 17.0%3, against Wells Fargo's 17.7%4.
The funding is similar and Wells Fargo's is cheaper. Bank of America's cost of total deposits, worked out from its own average balances, was about 1.74% in 202556; Wells Fargo's was about 1.52%7. Bank of America's page Cheaper Than JPMorgan, and It Does Not Show makes the same argument about itself.
Bank of America is the larger bank and runs more cheaply. Its deposits were $2,018,729 million at the end of 20258, and its efficiency ratio was 61.65%9 against Wells Fargo's 66%10.
The market gives Bank of America a slightly higher multiple: 12.9 times earnings against 11.911. That difference is the market's bet that Bank of America's cost base is better.
Bank of America's market value was $394.32 billion in September 202612, about 57% more than Wells Fargo's $250.90 billion1314, on deposits about 42% larger151617.
The funding gap has held for two years. Bank of America's all-in deposit cost was about 2.00% in 20241819, against Wells Fargo's about 1.80%20.
Bank of America carries a heavier capital requirement for its size. Its regulatory minimum for common equity tier 1 was 10.0% at the end of 2025, and it ran at 11.4%21, against Wells Fargo's 8.50% and 10.61%22. The lower requirement lets Wells Fargo hold less equity for each dollar of risk, which lifts its return on the same funding. Bank of America's larger surcharge buys it nothing in funding: its deposits still cost more. On funding and on required capital the structural facts favour Wells Fargo; only its cost base keeps the two banks level on returns.
The efficiency ratio is the comparison to follow. Wells Fargo's was 60% in the second quarter of 202623; a full year below Bank of America's would mean the peer had been overtaken where it counts.
ROTCE 14.6% vs 14.22% (2025), 17.7% vs 17.0% (Q2 2026).
The funding advantage over the closest peer; a gap that closed would leave Wells Fargo with only its higher costs.
