The Cheapest Deposits of the ThreeWide moat

Wells Fargo (WFC) — moat facet

Wells Fargo's deposits survived a scandal and a seven-year growth ban and still cost less than JPMorgan's.

Wells Fargo's moat is its deposit base, and the deposit base is better than the bank's reputation. Average deposits were $1,347,245 million in 20251, and their all-in cost was about 1.52%2, against 1.80% at JPMorgan3 and about 1.74% at Bank of America45.

Down again in 2025, and below both big rivals.

The deposits are cheap for a plain reason: most of them belong to households and small businesses. Consumer Banking and Lending held $828.4 billion of the bank's average deposits in the second quarter of 20266, and the consumer and small-business franchise earned a deposit spread of 2.58% in 20257.

The franchise also passed a test few banks ever face. From 2018 to 2025 the bank was barred from growing its balance sheet, and for part of that time it was in the news for opening accounts customers had not asked for. Its depositors did not leave. Average deposits were essentially identical in 2023, 2024 and 20258, and they grew 10% in the year to June 2026 once the cap was gone9.

There are two weaknesses. The free part of the base is smaller than it was, about 26.7% of average deposits in 2025 against about 35.5% in 202210. And the bank still carries a held-to-maturity bond book bought with pandemic deposits, $32,408 million under water in June 202611.

The segments' deposits show the same pattern at a smaller scale. In 2025 Consumer Banking and Lending held average deposits of $779,994 million, Commercial Banking $178,432 million, Corporate and Investment Banking $206,251 million and Wealth and Investment Management $127,257 million12. The consumer money is both the largest pool and the cheapest.

The deposits also carry a large payments business. Debit card purchase volume was $530.5 billion in 202513, and deposit-related fees were $5,099 million14. A checking account that is used every day earns fees as well as spread, and it is harder to move.

The quarterly deposit cost is the figure that keeps this facet honest. It was 1.51% in the second quarter of 202615; if it moved above JPMorgan's while rates were steady, the cheapest deposits of the three would no longer be the cheapest.
