Where the New Balance Sheet WentNarrow moat

Wells Fargo (WFC) — moat facet

Wells Fargo is spending the freedom the asset cap gave back mostly on trading and corporate loans, where its deposit moat helps least.

The question after the cap was lifted was not whether Wells Fargo would grow but where, and the answer so far is the investment bank. Corporate and Investment Banking total assets were $597,278 million at the end of 2024 and $787,751 million at the end of 20251, and $862,472 million in June 20262. The bank's total assets grew by about $352 billion in that period3.

The trading book grew almost three times as fast as the bank.

The detail is clear. Average trading-related assets rose from $283.7 billion to $401.5 billion in a year, Markets loans from $79.0 billion to $111.2 billion, and CIB average loans from $285.9 billion to $359.4 billion4.

This facet is narrow because it is only partly a moat. CIB has advantages: the bank's corporate relationships, its deposits from those same companies, and a low cost ratio of 46% in the second quarter of 20265. But trading and corporate lending are contested markets where capital, not cheap deposits, decides who wins.

The return is good so far. CIB earned 19.2% on allocated capital in the second quarter6. The price is visible in the margin, which fell from 2.68% to 2.43% over the year7.

Loan growth came from several places, and the release lists them. Average loans rose $109.8 billion, or 12%, on higher commercial and industrial loans, auto loans, securities-based loans in wealth management and credit card loans, partly offset by lower residential mortgages8. The mortgage book, the old heart of Wells Fargo's consumer lending, is the one line shrinking.

Segment profits show the effect. Corporate and Investment Banking earned net income of $2,329 million in the second quarter of 20269, more than Consumer Banking and Lending's $2,290 million10, on half the revenue.

The consumer franchise is where the deposit moat lives, and it has taken less of the growth. The balance to watch is CIB's share of average loans: about 35% in the second quarter of 2026 against about 31% a year earlier11. A share rising much further would make Wells Fargo a different bank from the one its depositors built.

Moat trajectory: Widening

CIB total assets $597,278M (2024) to $862,472M (June 2026); ROAC 19.2% in Q2 2026.

How much of the bank's lending now sits in the contested wholesale business; a share rising much further would change what kind of bank this is.

How it's calculated: CIB average loans divided by total average loans, Q2 2026 and Q2 2025, from the Q2 2026 earnings release and presentation: 359.4 / 1,026.5 and 285.9 / 916.7.
