The Advisory Client on $1.1 TrillionNarrow moat

Wells Fargo (WFC) — moat facet

Wells Fargo's largest fee line comes from wealthy clients whose loyalty is partly to their adviser.

The most valuable fee-paying customers are wealthy clients who pay a percentage of their assets for advice. Wells Fargo's advisory assets were $891 billion at the end of 2023, $998 billion at the end of 2024 and $1,127 billion at the end of 20251, up about 26% in two years2.

Advisory assets, period-end ($bn)891202399820241,1272025Wells Fargo Form 10-K FY2025, Wealth and Investment Management
Up a quarter in two years.

Those clients produce the bank's largest fee line. Investment advisory and other asset-based fees were $10,498 million in 20253, more than trading gains of $5,147 million and deposit-related fees of $5,099 million.

The relationship is with the adviser as much as the bank. Wealth and Investment Management runs at an efficiency ratio of 83% in 20254, because much of the revenue is paid out to the people who bring it in. When an adviser leaves, the client often follows.

Client assets across the segment were $2,509 billion at the end of 20255 and more than $2.4 trillion in June 2026, up 15%6.

Client assets in the segment were $2,084 billion at the end of 2023 and $2,293 billion at the end of 20247, and total company-wide client assets were $2,691 billion in June 20268.

The bank's premier segment, its wealthier retail customers, is growing too: premier client assets rose 13% in the year to the second quarter of 20269.

Advisory accounts are a minority of the assets and the majority of the fees. The $1,127 billion of advisory assets were about 45% of the segment's $2,509 billion of client assets at the end of 20251011, so moving a brokerage client into an advisory account is the segment's main lever for growth.

These clients need little capital. Wealth and Investment Management had $6.5 billion of allocated capital in 202512 and earned $2,119 million13, a 31.7% return on it14. That return is what makes the advisers worth keeping. It also makes them expensive.

Advisory assets rise with markets, so the test is whether they rise faster than markets do; a year in which they rose less would mean clients were leaving with their advisers.
