✦ $22.7 Billion of Buybacks LeftNarrow moat

Wells Fargo (WFC) — the future bets

Wells Fargo has $22.7 billion of buyback authority and less capital than before to spend it.

Wells Fargo still has plenty of room to buy back shares. It announced a $40 billion authorization in April 2025, and had about $22.7 billion remaining on 30 June 20261. It repurchased 37.4 million shares for $3.0 billion in the second quarter2.

Buybacks slowing as growth resumes.

The pace has slowed. The bank bought $17.7 billion in 20253 and about $7 billion in the first half of 20264. It is also raising the dividend, from $0.45 to $0.50 a quarter5.

The slowdown is the right choice now that the balance sheet can grow. Every dollar of capital put into loans rather than buybacks is a bet that the franchise can earn more than the shares' implied return.

The limit is the capital ratio: 10.3% in June 2026 against an 8.5% requirement67.

Diluted shares averaged 3,074.6 million in the second quarter of 2026, against 3,267.0 million a year earlier8.

In June 2026 alone the bank bought 12,530,780 shares at an average price of $79.809.

The remaining authorisation is large relative to the company. At the June average price of $79.8010, $22.7 billion would buy about 284 million shares11, about 9% of the 3,085,635,641 shares outstanding in February 20261213. At the 2025 pace of $17.7 billion14 it would last about fifteen months15; at the first-half 2026 pace, about a year and a half16.

Buybacks are worth most when the shares are cheap against their book. At 1.79 times tangible book in September 202617, each dollar spent retires about 56 cents of tangible equity18. The dividend is the other claim: at $0.50 a quarter19 on about 3.02 billion shares20, it costs about $6.0 billion a year21, before preferred dividends of $1,053 million22. Dividends and buybacks at the first-half pace would take most of the year's earnings, leaving growth to be funded from what remains.

The quarterly repurchase figure will show the choice. If it fell below about $2 billion while loan growth continued, the bank would be putting the franchise ahead of the share count for the first time in a decade.

Moat trajectory: Holding steady

Remaining authority about $22.7bn; Q2 2026 buybacks $3.0bn.

Room left to shrink the share count; slower use alongside loan growth would mean the bank was choosing growth.
