Churn Under One PercentWide moat
Verizon (VZ) — moat facet
Verizon loses fewer than one postpaid phone customer in a hundred each month, and each tenth of a point it saves is worth about a million phones a year.
The proof that customers find it hard to leave is the churn rate. Verizon's retail postpaid phone churn, the share of customers who leave in a month, was 0.88% in 2024 and 0.98% in 20251. In the June 2026 quarter it was 0.92% against 0.97% a year earlier, and 0.94% for the first half against 0.96%2.
At 0.92% a month, roughly one customer in ten leaves in a year3. For a service people pay for every month and could cancel on any of them, that is loyalty of a kind most businesses would envy. It comes from the family plan, the phone on instalments, the bundle with home broadband and the plain effort of porting a number.
The 2025 rise mattered because each tenth of a point is a lot of phones. On a base of about 94 million, a tenth of a percentage point of monthly churn is about 94 thousand phones a month4, or more than a million a year. The 10-K points to promotional pressure from rivals, warning of rivals' "offerings that include additional bundled premium content or other perks, in some cases specifically targeting Verizon customers"5.
Schulman's answer was to spend on retention and loyalty rather than on subsidies for new phones. The Q2 release credits "Simplicity plans, Verizon One converged offerings, and an industry-leading loyalty program"6.
The fourth quarter of 2025 was the high point for churn: postpaid phone churn was 1.02% against 0.92% a year earlier7. The first half of 2026 averaged 0.94%8. The chief executive's claim for the new plans is specific: customers are now kept on "real value rather than subsidized promotions"9.
AT&T's postpaid phone churn in the same quarter was 0.86%10. A quarter with Verizon back above 1% would say the new loyalty programme was bought, not earned.
Postpaid phone churn 0.92% in Q2 2026 against 0.97% a year earlier.
The stickiness in one figure; back above 1.0% would mean the loyalty spending is not holding customers.
