⚠ Wages Up 17.62 PercentLow threat
Verizon (VZ) — threat to the moat
Verizon's union contract fixes a 17.62% compounded wage rise to 2030 for a company whose revenue grew about 0.5% a year for a decade.
The union contract puts a number on one of Verizon's costs for four years. The compounded wage increase is 17.62% over the agreement, which runs to 3 August 20301, for a unionised workforce that is about 27% of employees2.
Revenue is not growing to match. Consolidated revenue rose from $131,620 million in 20153 to $138,191 million in 20254, about 0.5% a year5. Wireless service revenue is guided "approximately flat in 2026"6.
Verizon's answer is productivity: fewer people, more automation, fibre that needs fewer truck rolls than copper. That can work. But the easy cuts were made in 2025, and the unionised field workforce is the part of the company that builds and fixes the network.
The wage rises land on a company whose employee count went from 99.6 thousand at the end of 2024 to 89.9 thousand a year later and back to 97.6 thousand with Frontier78. About 27% of employees were represented by the two unions at the end of 20259, so the contract fixes the price of roughly a quarter of the workforce.
Cost of services was $27,789 million in 2025 against $27,997 million in 202410. Rises above 3% a year in 2027 and 2028 would show the wage agreement taking back the savings of the 2025 cut.
